Arthur was educated at Sydney Grammar School. He was qualified as an Analytical Chemist. He gave his occupation as Sugar Planter at Rewa, Fiji when he enlisted 10 February 1917 at Sydney, and his next of kin his wife Kathleen Beatrice Pain c/o Mrs Mary Allison Holt (Arthur's sister) 'Amalfi' Appian Way, Burwood, Sydney and later c/o Miss Creed, 'Emohruo' Campsie Street, Campsie and later 'Bally Brae' The Range, Rockhampton, QLD.

Arthur served in the 8th Field Artillery Brigade A.I.F. He departed Sydney on the 'Port Sydney' 5 November 1917 and arrived France via Egypt and England March 1918.

Gunner Arthur Clifford PAIN was killed in action in France 8 August 1918 age 43.
